2025
In 2025, bids for the design phase will be accepted.
2024
In 2024, city engineers conducted a comprehensive study of the Northwest Boulevard and Virginia Avenue area, including surrounding streets, to assess the impact of the temporary median closure. Based on the study's findings and the recommendation to make the closure permanent, the next phase involves designing a median extension in 2025, with construction planned for a future date.
The intersection of Northwest Boulevard and Virginia Avenue was analyzed due to a high number of traffic accidents, some of which were serious or fatal. The engineering team recommended extending the Northwest Boulevard island across the intersection to eliminate cross traffic on Virginia Avenue, aiming to enhance safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
2023
A public meeting was held on April 18, 2023, to discuss the planned safety improvements. These improvements were installed in early September of 2023. Temporary pylons were installed between the two medians on Northwest Boulevard. Virginia Avenue east of Northwest Boulevard became a right-turn-only northbound onto Northwest, and Virginia Avenue west of Northwest Boulevard became a right-turn-only southbound onto Northwest, as illustrated in the images below.
