Last year, the City’s Engineering team began an analysis of the Northwest Boulevard/Virginia Avenue intersection. The intersection was identified because of numerous traffic accidents, several of which were serious or fatal.
The analysis concluded with the Engineer’s recommendation to extend the Northwest Boulevard island across the intersection to eliminate the flow of cross traffic on Virginia Avenue with the goal of making the intersection safer for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
On April 18, 2023, a public meeting was held to discuss planned safety improvements for the Northwest Boulevard/Virginia Avenue intersection. The planned improvements will be installed in early September, weather permitting. The intersection will be evaluated after installation to assess the efficacy including impacts on the surrounding area and streets to determine a permanent road improvement.
We will be installing temporary pylons between the two medians on Northwest Boulevard. Virginia Avenue east of Northwest Boulevard will become a right turn only northbound onto Northwest. Virginia Avenue west of Northwest Boulevard will become a right turn only southbound onto Northwest, as shown in the images below.
You may see covered signage and markings installed before early September. This is part of the planning process ahead of installation. Additional communications will be published prior to the start date.
Installation of temporary pylons is slated for September 11, weather permitting.
