When the Grandview Heights City Schools embarked on their $55M transformation project, it soon became clear that City infrastructure surrounding the Schools' 4-12 campus would need to be revised to align with their new campus plan.
Through a close partnership between the City and the Schools, guided by input from the community through both the Schools' planning process and the City's Spaces & Places planning process, a comprehensive realignment of the School's campus and the City's infrastructure was made possible.
Through this partnership, the Schools will be able to relocate and consolidate parking along the southern extension of Fairview Avenue (north of First Ave) and create new multi-use open athletic space and playground areas.
The City extended and rebuilt Fairview Avenue between First and Third Avenues, adding a traffic light on First Avenue to control vehicular traffic. This enhances pedestrian safety while allowing cars to access the new Middle School front door from First Avenue, accommodating easier access for the majority of vehicular commuters.
Project components include:
a wide, multi-use pathway for bike and pedestrian student commuters to access the new Middle Schools front door
a raised cross-walk from the Schools' parking lot and garden beds across Fairview to the new combined 4-12 building\
pull-off spaces for pick-ups and drop-offs, safely out of the main flow of traffic
The City accepted a parcel at the corner of the Fairview extension and First Avenue that has now been converted to parkland. Amenities for this new City park will be studied through a future Comprehensive Parks Master Plan, but preliminarily includes bike racks, green space and trees.
This project was made possible through generous funding made available through the Ohio Public Works Commission.
